The Azores - Faial Island

Faial is also the colorful sight of the many yachts that make
Horta their port of call after crossing the Atlantic. There is the
naked landscape of the Capelinhos volcano, the circle of a deep crater
covered in the islands edema vegetation an in particular there is the
most amazing natural vantage point from which to admire the neighboring
island of Pico and the majesty of the enormous volcanic cone that was
born out of the bottom of the sea.
The scenic bay along which the citys white houses sprawl, the gently
undulating mountains that slowly rise until almost rise until almost
brushing the clouds, greenness everywhere and broad brushstrokes
created by blue hydrangeas these are the charms of Faial , an island
that seems to take hold of all who visit, only letting go with great
reluctance.

Geography
In the form of an
irregular pentagon covering an area of 173.42 Km², the island of Faial
is 21 km long and 14 km wide at its maximum points. Dominated by the
volcanic cone of the Caldeira spreading down in gentle slopes
interrupted by secondary volcanic formations, the highest point of the
island is Cabeço Gordo rising to 1.043 meters. Faial is situated at a
point between 38º 33' north and 28º 38' west.
What to visit
Caldeira
Caldeira (around 200 meters in diameter, 400 meters deep and a perimeter of 7 km). From here the visitor can appreciate the living watercolor of the luxuriant vegetations that covers the almost sheer slopes, carpeting its deep and a secondary volcanic cone with a small lake at its base that dried up during the eruption of the Capelinhos. The Caldeira is a sanctuary for the forest of heather that covered the island before it was inhabited.
Marina of Horta
Nobody knows when and how it all began. One day, quite a few years ago the crew of a sailing boat anchored at Horta decided that they should leave a commemoration of their voyage on the harbour wall. The first picture was followed by others until the entire lenght of the wall was filled up, transforming what had been a dark and irregular surface into a colourful mosaic of drawings and inscriptions evoking yachts that put into Horta

With the volcanic eruption of 1957/58 in the extremity occidental of the island of Faial in the clientele of the Capelo, the area of the island is increased in about 2,4 km2.
